Signs It's Time for a New Fence

  • Posts leaning or rotted along much of the line
  • Boards that are gray, split, soft or termite-eaten
  • Repairs after every storm season
  • Vinyl that's brittle, cracked or discontinued
  • A new pool, dog or horse your current fence wasn't built for
  • An HOA notice about the fence's condition

Many homes in Silver Springs Shores and Marion Oaks went up in recent growth waves with builder-grade fences that are now wearing out. Older Ocala neighborhoods are often on their second or third wood fence.

Choosing What Comes Next

Replacement is the best chance you'll get to fix everything you didn't like about the old fence:

  • Change material. Wood to vinyl is the most common swap we make.
  • Add or widen gates. Room for a riding mower, a boat, or a horse trailer.
  • Fix the layout. Move a line that wandered off the survey or pull a fence back out of a drainage swale.
  • Go taller or lower. Six feet in back for privacy, lower and open in front.
  • Meet current rules. An old pool fence may not meet today's barrier requirements, and HOA standards change.
  • Historic homes. In the Ocala and Tuscawilla Park districts, a new fence needs a Certificate of Appropriateness even if it replaces an old one.

Thinking about going bigger? Replacement is also the time to add a pool barrier for a pool you're planning, fence in a dog run off the back door, or extend the fence to take in more of the yard. On farms it's a good moment to add cross-fencing so you can rotate pastures.

The process

Our Fence Replacement Process

Removal and the new install are usually done back to back.

Estimate with removal itemized

We measure, check your survey and talk upgrades. Removal is a separate line on the quote.

Paperwork

We confirm city or county rules and file any permit, COA or HOA request.

Utility locates

Sunshine 811 marks lines before old footings come out and new holes go in.

Tear-out

Panels, posts and old concrete come out and go on our trailer, not your curb.

New fence and walk-through

The new fence goes in, gates are tested, and the line is raked clean.

Removal Done Right

  • Everything goes. Old concrete footings are pulled, not just snapped off at grade.
  • Irrigation and beds protected. We work around sprinkler lines and flag anything we find along the old line.
  • Pets and pools covered. We plan the work so the yard isn't left open overnight when you have dogs, horses or a pool.
  • Farm rebuilds in stages. On pastures we replace sections while animals use the rest of the farm.

A Typical Replacement Timeline

  • Estimate: we measure, look up your parcel and talk through options.
  • Approvals: most Ocala yard fences need no building permit, so this can be quick. Pool barriers, historic district fences and HOA reviews take longer.
  • Build: one to three days for a typical backyard; farm rebuilds depend on footage.
  • Walk-through: we check every gate with you before we leave.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit to replace my fence in Ocala?

Inside city limits, a residential fence 6 ft or under generally doesn't need a building permit, but historic districts need a COA and pool barriers need a permit. In the county we confirm with Building Safety. See the permit guide.

Can the new posts go in the old holes?

Sometimes, but old concrete usually has to come out or the new posts get offset. We decide based on condition and new post spacing.

How long does a replacement take?

Most backyard replacements take one to three days for removal and install combined.

Do I need to be home?

Not necessarily. We confirm the layout with you first. With pets, livestock or a pool, we plan so the property is secure each night.

Will you damage my sprinklers?

We work carefully around irrigation and planting beds and repair anything we disturb.

Should I repair instead?

If damage is limited to a few sections, repair is usually cheaper. We'll give you an honest recommendation.

What happens to my old fence?

We haul it away. Old boards, vinyl panels, wire and posts go on our trailer, and the old concrete footings are pulled out rather than left in the ground where they'd block new posts or a future garden bed.
