When Chain Link Makes Sense

Many lots in Marion Oaks, Silver Springs Shores and Rainbow Lakes Estates are larger than city lots, and acreage is common in the north and east of the county. When you have that much line to fence, price per foot decides a lot.

  • Long property lines where privacy isn't the goal.
  • Dog yards that need to be secure more than pretty.
  • Gardens and chicken runs, with smaller mesh where needed.
  • Shops and storage yards for small businesses.

Some HOAs limit chain link or allow only black vinyl-coated. We check first.

Choosing Your Chain Link Fence

Height

Four feet is standard for yards. Five or six feet suits big or athletic dogs and security fencing.

Wire gauge

A lower number means thicker wire. Heavier gauge resists dogs, kids and falling branches better.

Coating

Galvanized is cheapest. Vinyl-coated black, green or brown looks far better, lasts longer in humid weather and is the version HOAs most often allow.

Privacy slats

Slats woven into the mesh add partial screening. They catch more wind, so we use heavier posts when slats are planned.

Livestock

Chain link holds goats and dogs, but it isn't designed for horses. For pastures, see our horse and farm fencing.

Gates

Chain link gates are inexpensive and easy to widen later. A 4 ft walk gate handles bins and foot traffic, while a 10 to 12 ft double gate lets a truck or trailer into the back of a larger lot. For acreage, a galvanized drive gate on heavy terminal posts is the usual choice. See gate installation for sizing.

Business properties

For shops, storage yards and job-site perimeters, we use heavier posts and top rail, taller mesh and lockable gates. Inside Ocala city limits, every commercial fence needs a site permit, which we file with the city.

The process

How We Install Chain Link

The framework is what keeps chain link tight for years.

Measure and mark

We confirm lines from your survey and mark corners, ends and gates.

Terminal posts in concrete

End, corner and gate posts carry the tension, so they go in concrete at full depth.

Line posts and top rail

Line posts go in at even spacing and the top rail ties the frame together.

Stretch the mesh

Mesh is pulled tight with a tension bar and tied off to posts, rail and a bottom wire.

Gates and cleanup

Gates are hung and adjusted, and we rake the line clean.

Making Chain Link Dog-Proof

  • Bottom tension wire so dogs can't push under the mesh.
  • Tight gate gaps so small dogs can't squeeze past.
  • Dig barriers for diggers: buried wire or a concrete strip along the base in sandy soil.
  • Right height for jumpers: 5 or 6 ft for big breeds.
  • Coated mesh that's smoother on paws and noses.

Have a pool too? Chain link can only serve as a pool barrier with mesh small enough to meet code. See our pool fence rules for Ocala.

Green chain link fence around a garden and chicken run

Gardens, Chickens and Small Livestock

Plenty of Marion County households keep a big garden, a few chickens or a pair of goats. Chain link with a smaller mesh, a buried skirt and a tight gate keeps rabbits out of the garden and keeps the flock in. For goats we add height and bottom wire, since they test every gap.

Bigger animals need a different fence. For horses and cattle, see our horse and farm fencing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is chain link the cheapest fence?

For most residential jobs, yes. Galvanized chain link has the lowest installed cost per foot of the common fence types.

How long does chain link last in Florida?

Galvanized commonly lasts 15 to 20 years or more. Vinyl-coated adds protection against humidity.

Can I add privacy to chain link?

Yes, with slats, windscreen fabric or a hedge, though none match a solid privacy fence.

Is chain link okay for horses?

We don't recommend it. Hooves can catch in the mesh. See our horse fence comparison guide for safer choices.

Do HOAs allow chain link?

Some do, some don't, and some allow only black vinyl-coated in back yards. We check your rules first.

Do you do commercial chain link?

Yes, including taller fences, heavier framework and swing or rolling gates for equipment yards.

Can chain link go on a sloped or rocky lot?

Yes. Chain link follows the ground better than panel fences, so it handles rolling lots well. Where post holes hit limestone, we drill to full depth instead of cutting posts short, because short terminal posts are why chain link goes slack.
