Step One: City or County?

An Ocala mailing address doesn't mean you're in the City of Ocala. Large parts of the Ocala area are unincorporated Marion County, and the rules differ. Before we plan a fence, we look up the parcel to see which office has jurisdiction.

Inside Ocala City Limits

According to the City of Ocala's Building Services office (201 SE 3rd St, 352-629-8421), residential fences 6 ft or lower generally don't need a building permit. A permit is required for:

  • Fences taller than 6 ft
  • Masonry or concrete fences that act like walls
  • Any fence in a historic district
  • All commercial fences, which need a site permit

Even without a permit, zoning still applies. On corner lots the city keeps a sight triangle clear of anything between 2.5 ft and 10 ft high, measured 25 ft from the intersection in residential districts. Setback questions go to the city Planning Department at 352-629-4040. The city code also restricts barbed wire, with exceptions for livestock, and electrified fences need a city license.

Historic Districts

The Ocala and Tuscawilla Park historic districts are locally designated. Putting up a fence or wall there requires a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Historic Preservation Office (352-629-8404). We prepare the drawing, materials and photos the application asks for.

Unincorporated Marion County

Marion County Building Safety, at 2710 E. Silver Springs Blvd. (352-438-2400), covers communities like Silver Springs Shores, Marion Oaks, On Top of the World and Fort McCoy. The county's land development code lists fences among structures exempt from building setbacks. Contractor guides commonly say a residential fence of 6 ft or less doesn't need a county permit, but the county's own FAQ says permits apply broadly, so we confirm for each job. Pool barriers always go through permitting.

Other Cities

  • Dunnellon: the city lists fencing among work that requires a permit and has its own fence application.
  • Belleview: Development Services (352-245-7021) handles permits; we check the city's current fence rules for your lot.
  • Reddick: a small incorporated town; we confirm which office reviews your fence.
  • Rainbow Lakes Estates: crosses into Levy County, so some lots fall under Levy rules.

HOAs and Planned Communities

HOA approval is separate from any government permit. Communities like Ocala Palms, On Top of the World and Golden Ocala have their own standards. We supply product sheets, colors and a layout drawing for your application.

Pool Fences

Pool barriers follow state law no matter where you live. See our pool fence rules.
