One Fence Company for Yards and Pastures

Ocala is the Horse Capital of the World, and plenty of properties here are part house lot, part farm. A single estimate often covers two very different fences: something private and tidy around the house and pool, and something safe for horses or cattle out in the field. We build both, and we plan where they meet so the gates line up and the corners are solid.

  • Vinyl privacy for backyards that sit close to the neighbors or a busy road.
  • Aluminum for pool barriers and front yards where you want to see out.
  • Board, vinyl rail and no-climb wire for paddocks and pastures, with no sharp edges at horse height.
  • Chain link for long back lines, dog runs and equipment yards where price per foot matters most.

What We Look For at Your Estimate

Marion County sits on the Ocala Uplift, where limestone can be anywhere from right at the surface to 50 feet down. That shows up when we dig: one hole is soft sand, the next one hits rock. A good estimate accounts for that before you sign anything.

  • The ground. We probe a few spots along the line so the quote reflects sand, clay pockets or rock that needs a rock bit.
  • Your survey and corners. We find the pins or work from your survey so the fence sits on your side of the line.
  • Jurisdiction. An Ocala mailing address can be inside city limits or in unincorporated Marion County. We look up the parcel because the rules differ.
  • Trees and drainage. Live oak roots, low spots that hold water after a summer storm, and swales all affect post placement.
  • Gates and access. Mowers, trailers, horse trailers and hay deliveries all need different gate widths.

You get a written quote with a sketch of the layout and every gate. There's no charge and no pressure.

What Pushes an Ocala Fence Quote Up or Down

Two quotes for the same length of fence can be far apart. These are the usual reasons:

  • Linear footage. Everything is priced by the foot, so a 1-acre lot or a pasture costs more than a quarter-acre yard. National guides put a typical 150 to 200 ft residential fence at roughly $3,000 to $4,500.
  • Rock. Holes that hit limestone take a rock auger or core bit and more time. We tell you at the estimate if we expect it.
  • Height and style. A 6 ft privacy fence uses far more material than a 4 ft picket or a 3-board fence.
  • Gates. A walk gate is a modest add. A 12 to 16 ft farm or drive gate with heavy posts costs more, and pool gates need self-closing hardware.
  • Tear-out. Removing an old fence, its posts and concrete footings is itemized separately.
  • Permit or COA. Many Ocala yard fences need no building permit, but pool barriers, fences over 6 ft and fences in historic districts do.

Storms, Oak Limbs and the Odd Freeze

Ocala is inland, but it still takes hits. When Hurricane Milton passed south of town in October 2024, nearly 47,000 Marion County utility customers lost power and downed trees were reported all over the county. For fences, falling live oak limbs usually do more damage than wind itself.

  • Posts sized for the job. We set posts deep enough for the fence height and soil, in concrete for privacy fences and gate posts.
  • Open styles where it's exposed. Aluminum, chain link and rail fences let wind through, which matters on open lots and pastures.
  • Trim before you build. We point out dead limbs over the fence line at the estimate so you can deal with them first.
  • Cold snaps. Ocala has recorded lows of 11°F. Rigid vinyl gets less forgiving in hard cold, so we avoid setting it under constant strain at gates and corners.

Permits, Historic Districts and HOAs

Inside Ocala city limits

According to the City of Ocala's Building Services office, residential fences 6 ft or lower generally don't need a building permit. Fences taller than 6 ft, masonry or concrete fences that act like walls, and fences in a historic district do. Corner lots also have to keep the sight triangle at the intersection clear. We confirm all of this for your lot before we dig.

Historic Ocala and Tuscawilla Park

In the city's two locally designated historic districts, putting up a fence or wall requires a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Historic Preservation Office. We help prepare the drawing and material details for the application.

Unincorporated Marion County

Much of the Ocala area sits outside city limits, where Marion County Building Safety on East Silver Springs Boulevard has jurisdiction. The county's land code exempts fences from building setbacks. We confirm with the county whether your project needs a permit, and pool barriers always go through permitting.

Other cities and HOAs

Belleview, Dunnellon and Reddick are their own municipalities; Dunnellon, for one, lists fencing as work that needs a city permit. Planned communities such as Ocala Palms and On Top of the World also have their own rules. We put together the drawings and product sheets your association asks for. Details in our Ocala fence permit guide.

Pool Fences Built to Florida Law

A pool fence is the one fence where the rules are the same everywhere in the state. Florida's Residential Swimming Pool Safety Act requires a barrier at least 4 ft high on the outside, with no gaps or footholds a young child could use to get under, through or over it.

  • Gates open outward, away from the pool, and close and latch on their own.
  • The latch release sits on the pool side, out of a small child's reach.
  • The barrier stands far enough from the water that a child who gets past it can't fall straight in.

Aluminum is the usual choice because it meets the rules and keeps the pool in view. We handle the permit and inspection. See our pool fence rules for Ocala.

Fencing Around Ocala and Marion County

Marion County covers a lot of ground, and the fence that makes sense changes from one community to the next:

  • Historic Ocala: the Ocala and Tuscawilla Park districts need a Certificate of Appropriateness before any fence goes up, so picket and wood styles that suit a Victorian porch are the norm.
  • Golden Ocala and the World Equestrian Center corridor: board and vinyl rail on rolling ground, with club rules to follow near the course.
  • Ocala Palms and On Top of the World: 55+ communities where low patio screens, pet pens and pool barriers are more common than full privacy fences.
  • Silver Springs Shores and Marion Oaks: thousands of newer homes on standard lots, many getting their first backyard fence.
  • Reddick, Fort McCoy and Rainbow Lakes Estates: acreage, livestock and long runs where no-climb wire and wide farm gates earn their keep.

We also work in Belleview, Dunnellon and the Silver Springs area. Each area page lists who issues permits there and what we see on local lots.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a fence cost in Ocala?

For residential fences, national cost guides put chain link around $10–$40 per foot installed, wood privacy $15–$50, vinyl privacy $15–$60 and aluminum $15–$75. Farm fencing varies with the number of rails and the wire. Your free estimate gives you an exact written price. See the cost guide.

Do I need a permit for a fence in Ocala?

Inside city limits, a residential fence 6 ft or lower generally doesn't need a building permit, but taller fences, masonry fences and fences in a historic district do. In unincorporated Marion County we confirm with Building Safety for your job. Pool barriers always need a permit. More in the permit guide.

How do I know if my address is in the city or the county?

Your mailing address doesn't tell you. Many Ocala addresses are in unincorporated Marion County. We look up the parcel before we plan the fence, because the permit office and the rules depend on it.

Do you build horse fence?

Yes. We build board fence, vinyl rail, no-climb woven wire with a top board, and combinations of these, plus farm gates. See horse and farm fencing.

What if you hit rock when digging?

It's common here because limestone can sit close to the surface. We switch to a rock auger or core bit and set the post at full depth. We flag likely rock at the estimate so it's in your quote, not a surprise.

What's the best privacy fence for an Ocala backyard?

A 6 ft vinyl privacy fence is the low-maintenance favorite. Board-on-board wood costs less up front but needs sealing. If you're in an HOA, we check the approved styles first.

How long does installation take?

Most backyard fences take one to three days on site. Farm fences depend on footage and rock. Any permit, COA or HOA approval usually takes longer than the build, so we start that right away.

Do you install pool fences?

Yes, built to Florida's pool barrier law with self-closing, self-latching gates. We handle the permit and inspection. See our pool fence rules.

Can you fix a fence damaged by a fallen tree?

Yes. We remove the damaged section, reset or replace posts and match the material where it's still available. Take photos before anything is moved if you plan to file a claim. See fence repair.

Do you remove the old fence?

Yes. On replacement jobs we pull the old fence, posts and concrete footings and haul everything away.

Are estimates free?

Yes. The on-site visit and written quote are free, with no obligation.

What areas do you serve?

Ocala and most of Marion County, including Silver Springs Shores, Marion Oaks, On Top of the World, Belleview, Dunnellon, Reddick and Fort McCoy. See all service areas.
